4/15/2023 0 Comments Tongue twister in the court jester![]() ![]() ![]() Its an odd idea in concept, but the execution is absolutely astounding and both actors are able to perfectly drive home the absurdity of the scene. A fantastic example being a scene where Hawkins must square off against a skilled knight and remember a very confusing tongue twister that could save his life, all the while wearing highly magnetic armor. ![]() This film is chock-full with scenes of clever word play and absurd situations. The other part of what makes this film is the amazing jokes. It is ludicrous how much rhyming, alliteration and swapping between emotions Kaye is able to accomplish within ever single scene and it all cultivates in a performance that is able to rival the likes of Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka or Robin Williams as the Genie. This is the plot initially, but quickly enough it spirals out of control as Hawkins must juggle several different problems such as try to make amends with the princess who he seduces under the control of hypnotism, and unknowingly makes a partnership with one of the king's men who plans on assassinating his majesty for his own needs.Ĭourt Jester is one of those old technicolor films that doesn't take itself seriously in the slightest and is just 100 minutes of pure comedic gold.Ī part of what makes it so amazing is the performance of Danny Kaye, who's able to transform into different personalities in a split second and can do it continuously over the course of the film. The Court Jester is a comedic medieval movie from 1955 starring Danny Kaye as Hubert Hawkins, who after a stroke of luck is able to disguise himself as the new jester for an evil ruler as a part of an elaborate plot to overthrow the king and bestow the royalty to the true king. Hopefully I can change that with this post. Normally if a movie is witty, charming, and funny it becomes at the very least a cult classic, but I have never heard a single soul outside of my own family ever even mention this film. Never before have I ever seen a movie this good be so obscure. ![]()

4/15/2023 0 Comments Rad electric bike step through![]() ![]() And the e-bike is one way of solving that problem, but there’s a whole bunch of others.Īnd the e-bike is changing the way we move about the world. It’s like, taking your huge multi-ton car seems ridiculous. There’s a lot of distances, a lot of errands you can run, things you can go, picking up your kids, picking up something at a store or at a pharmacy that might be a mile and a half, they (ph) might be two miles. That’s really exciting because there’s lots of different ingenuity going into different ways to get people from point A to point B that isn’t a car and isn’t necessarily public transportation, but there’s a lot of distances in life that are between those two. ![]() There’s the delivery workers who were on e-bikes.Īnd after what felt like a long time in which there was, like, two or three different ways to get around, there’s like you can bike, you can take your car, I guess you can take like a Vespa or a motorcycle, maybe you can rollerblade or skateboard, it seems like we’re living through a kind of like transportation revolution right now. There are e-bikes that are built out of kits. There’s the electronic scooters with battery scooters. I tend not to do it in the winter because I’m a little bit of a wimp about the cold.īut one of the things I noticed when I started this commute was, all of a sudden, the bike lanes were full of all kinds of new forms of mobility. And now, I still do it, you know, for basically the three months of fall when it’s nice, three or four months of the spring when it’s nice. But it was just, I don’t know, it’s my favorite commute I’ve ever done. And it could feel, at night sometimes, a little dangerous. That’s true on both First and Second Avenue going uptown or downtown, depending on what part of the day it was. You’ve got, you know, protected bike lanes, and I’m making air quotes, that include during the COVID era a sidewalk, a protected bike lane, and then the other side of the bike lane, like the shacks that restaurants were in with waiters crossing through the bike lane with drinks and food, which is a completely ludicrous situation from a design standpoint. And this e-bike commute became my favorite commute I’ve ever had in my life, anywhere, anytime. I was pedaling, it was a pedal-assist bike. ![]() It’s not like you’re just coasting the entire way. Honestly, it was about the same as the subway. So this was the sort of perfect solution because I could get to work, it would take me as much time. And so, if you show up on a nine-mile bike ride to work, you’re about to do a television show, like, you don’t look good. ![]() 4/12/2023 0 Comments Essential oils deep therapy![]() ![]() Research into the therapy revealed many benefits and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) suggests it may help treat feelings of agitation in those with dementia. Burning a relaxing scent in your home or adding essential oils to a warm, evening bath can help prepare your body and mind for sleep. Many people find aromatherapy a helpful aid for sleep. Unsurprisingly, horological knowledge and experience is abundant. In the decades after the Quartz crisis, many watch brands have sprouted in the city. Similarly, the Luminor improved on the previous Radiomir to meet the requirements of evolving military diver needs.įlorence’s watchmaking heritage wouldn’t only be demonstrated through Panerai, though. For example, the first Mare Nostrum chronograph was intended for deck officers. ![]() Panerai’s connection to the Italian military had been forged, and future models would likewise aim to serve their specific needs. Additionally, the simple dial with large numerals ensured clear legibility. The luminescent material applied on the dial aided Italian frogmen who worked in the deep. From the small shop, the Panerai family would craft timepieces for Royal Italian Navy divers, first giving birth to the iconic Radiomir. The Orologeria Svizzera (“Swiss watchmaker”) shop would come to be in Florence around the beginning of the 20th century. Equally important, and local to Firenze, were the likes of Galileo and da Vinci.Ĭenturies later, the medieval hub of trade and finance would prove fertile ground for significant watch companies of the modern day. Indeed, Dondi pioneered in the design of clocks and even produced an astronomical clock. The influence of time (and its measuring) in Florence is believed to date back to the 14th century with Giovanni Dondi. The precision timepiece component would not survive to the modern day. The company would expand aggressively into this sector, and would eventually be absorbed by Fiat in the 80s. While successful in the first half of the century with their watches, Borletti and his siblings would find the automotive sector most lucrative. ![]() These would become even more widespread than their timepiece offerings. His factory, referred to as the first watchmaking factory in Italy, would secure the majority of Italian market share of the 1900s.īorletti also expanded production into other precision devices, such as odometers, speedometers, and alarm clocks. On the other hand, Borletti employed a strategy focused on mass production. More specifically, the Serpenti ladies’ timepiece, a snake-inspired bracelet with a timepiece at the end, demonstrates this perfectly. This blend between jewelry and watches remains evident in Bvlgari’s modern offerings. Notably, Sotirio’s timepieces boasted precious metal constructions and artistic decorations in a world where function was the primary reason for owning one. ![]() Naturally, the fact Bvlgari’s business also sold jewelery influenced the timepieces he created. Ironically enough, this same posture is what led the renaissance in luxury watches post- Quartz Crisis. Of course, read a book while you’re at it, too, but here is the best round-up of WWII movies that properly address and preserve the memory of this major moment in history.Voulgari, who “Italianized” his last name to Bvlgari, would follow the philosophy of exclusivity – his watches were to be made in a “bottega”, an artistic workshop, and remain limited in production. To let our consumption stop at the American exceptionalism role as “heroes” in this event, without proper context and analysis, is to risk letting history repeat itself. As we revisit early cinema’s patriotic depictions of WWII, as well as modern cinema’s more nuanced interpretations, it’s vital that we bear witness to the realities of this era. Ironically, so have the films depicting it. However, our understanding of this war, and the humanitarian crisis at its root, has greatly expanded. For these reasons, WWII has held tremendous relevance in cinema-both for its compelling narrative and for its fodder as jingoistic propaganda. A black and white dichotomy of “good guys” and “bad guys” laid before us with tales of heroic sacrifice, secrecy, and an evil, inhumane villain at the root of it all. The way many of us first learned about World War II was inherently cinematic. ![]() |
